What To Do Before Your Emergency Plumber Arrives
Simple steps every homeowner can take to reduce water damage and stay safe while waiting for emergency plumbing service.

When a pipe bursts or a sewer line backs up, panic is a natural reaction. However, taking a few quick, calculated steps before your emergency plumber arrives can save you thousands of dollars in water damage and keep your family safe.
1. Shut Off the Main Water Supply
This is the single most important step. If a pipe has burst or a fixture is overflowing uncontrollably, locate your home's main water shut-off valve and turn it clockwise to stop the flow of water. Make sure everyone in your household knows where this valve is located.
2. Turn Off Your Water Heater
If you've turned off the main water supply, you must also turn off your water heater. If a water heater continues to run without a fresh supply of water, it can overheat, causing severe damage to the unit or even creating a pressure explosion hazard. Turn off the gas valve or flip the circuit breaker for electric models.
3. Address Electrical Hazards
Water and electricity are a deadly combination. If the leak is near electrical outlets, appliances, or an electrical panel, go to your main breaker box and shut off the power to that specific area of the house. Never step into standing water if there are submerged outlets or appliances.
4. Open Drains and Faucets
Even after the main water is shut off, there is still water sitting in your pipes. Go outside and open your spigots, and turn on the cold water taps in your sinks to drain the remaining water away from the leak inside your home.
5. Begin Cleanup and Clear the Area
Once the water is off and the area is safe, use towels, mops, or a wet vac to start removing standing water to protect your floors and drywall. Move furniture out of the way and clear a path so the plumber has immediate access to the problem area when they arrive.
